Growing Methods
I grow all my vegetables organically, using kitchen compost and composted horse manure to amend the soil in spring, and liquid seaweed and fish fertilizer along with molasses as a foliar feed. After the harvest, potato and garlic beds are planted with buckwheat for 'green manure', and I turn the buckwheat under just before it goes to seed. The melon, pepper, and tomatoes are harvested much later, and therefore I plant winter rye in early-mid October, after removing the plants. Winter rye grows through the winter months and it is ready to turn under in April-early May, just in time to plant the new tomato and pepper crops!
I grow most of my tomatoes under plastic cover, to protect from foliage diseases that usually come after rain. I do not use any fungicides or pesticides in my garden.
Peppers and melons are grown in non-heated greenhouses, as the PNW summers are usually not hot enough to ripen the fruit before the frost. This also allows me to set out transplants earlier in spring, thus extending the growing season quite a bit.
Our garden backs into the wilderness, and deer and, occasionally, bears, come by regularly to visit us. After unsuccessfully trying some deer-repellents and netting as a protection, we finally settled on installing a high voltage electric fence around the garden area, and this effectively stopped both deer and bear 'attacks' for good.
