Aji Flor C. baccatum aji red Richard Nadeau of St-Pie-de-Guire, Quebec (QUE NA R) 12 / Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds I suspect that the seeds I received are not true to type, as they produced very compact branching plants, 1.5-2' tall, unlike the tall and lanky plants of Cambuci pepper that I grew in 2012. Plants seem to be determinate, as each branch is terminating in flower/fruit. Fruits are small and flattened round cherry-type that ripen from dark green to beautiful chocolate brown. Little to almost no heat, great flavor. Look just like Chocolate Cherry (Pepper). * This is Arawak-Spanish name for flower-shaped chili.
  • Also known as Aji Orchid or Orchid pepper, and often mislabelled as Rocotillo.
  • Originated in Brazil (?), it came to Europe by the Portuguese in the 18th century.
  • This pepper is part of the species Capsicum baccatum var. pendulum.

Aji Rojo C. baccatum aji red Jeannine Chalmers, Coquitlam, BC, Canada 12 / CV? (C. bacattum) Tall and lanky plants with narrow leaves grow to 3-4' tall. Heavy fruit set quite early in the season. Beautiful slim long peppers mature from pale green to brilliant red. 0.75 x 4". Delicious hot flavor, with nice fruity undertones. High yields. Dries easily. * Originated in Peru. Some sources say that it came from La Paz, Bolivia.
  • First offered in the Seed Savers 1996 Yearbook by Stephen Fox of Plano, Texas (TX FO S), who purchased seeds from Johnny's Selected Seeds . Not listed by SSE members since 2006.
  • Perhaps due to its somewhat generic name, there are some other peppers with the same name exist - i.e., small round red.

Manzano Red C. pubescens chili
rocoto
red Pepper Gal 13 (C. pubescens) It is a perennial pepper that is rather cold and rain tolerant. Plants grow to 6', can overwinter in mild climates and live for many years. Plants do not like heat, and should be shaded in hotter climates. Leaves and steams are hairy, and not glossy as other pepper species. Purple blossoms are small and so pretty. Unusual black seeds that may not germinate very well, even if they are very fresh. It does not self-pollinate, so you need to grow at least 3-6 plants to ensure good cross-pollination. Produces the most in its 2nd or 3rd year, so it is best to overwinter. In our area, plants start blooming in early August in the first year, but set very few fruits. Red bell-shaped pods are smooth and deliciously hot. * Very old pepper variety from Andes region of Peru.
  • This pepper is a rocoto tree pepper relative and is noted for its cold hardiness. It naturally grows on Andean mountain slopes, and can survive mild frosts. Perennial.
  • 'Manzano' means 'apple'.

Mamontenok C. annuum bell red Alla Gavlovskaya, South Urals, Russia 10 Compact plants, 1.5-2' tall, produce medium sized ruffled peppers that ripen from dark green to red. Very good taste. I cannot see why it was called 'Baby Mammoth', unless 'baby' refers to fruit size. I think this pepper has a potential to grow larger fruits, but I planted them in a shady spot and the plants did not perform very well. * Russian commercial variety, from Siberia. long large 2013 75 midseason open-pollinated Russia
Mauve C. annuum bell purple Julien Schmit of Nancy, France 10 Sweet bell peppers with 3-4 lobes, fruits start as creamy-white and develop some lilac tinge, then will turn purple. As pods mature, they acquire brighter yellow / orange tinge, and eventually turn dark purplish red, when fully mature. Strong and vigorous plants. Very good sweet taste. Seeds are a bit spicy. (20 seeds / packet)
I received it labelled 'Mauve Lilac Violet', but since 'Mauve' means 'purple' or 'lilac' in French, it looks like 'Lilac Violet' is not part of the original name.
* This is likely the Lilac pepper that is available from Solana Seeds .
  • There is also Lilac F1 hybrid pepper bred by Northrup-King Seed Company.
  • It is unclear if this pepper is related to Lilac F1 hybrid (but I suspect this is a strong possibility). If they are indeed related, it is not clear how stable it is.
