History

  • Non-commercial variety from Siberia, Russia.
  • Introduced to SSE by Carolyn Male of NY (NY MA C) in 2008, who also observed smaller fruit (5-11 oz).
  • This is the original description supplied by Andrey Baranovski of Minsk, Belarus, who also shared the seed with many North American tomato growers at Tomatoville:
...midseason, semi-det. (80-120 cm high) with a good yield of dark-red, heart shaped, meaty 300-700 g fruits, very good flavour, disease tolerant. Siberian amateurish variety.

Also known as

Russian name:

The name can be translated as "Tsar of Bells" and refers to the largest existing Bell which cracked while it was still in the casting pit in 1737. The Tsar of Bells is 19 ft high and weighs 440,000 lb, and is now displayed in the Moscow Kremlin (see [1]). Obviously the name refers to the tomato fruit shape, which resembles a bell.
