* Developed by a tomato enthusiast Nikolai Egorov of Chelyabisnk, Russia in the early 2000s. He named it after the Russian president, Vladimir Putin. When the breeder tried to register the name, he got a rejection that said that nobody should be naming vegetables or fruits after Russian presidents. The story made it to the newspaper "Pravda" in 2002.
