History

  • Heirloom from 1930s, said to be developed by a gardener Marshall Cletis Byles (simply known as Charlie or Radiator Charlie Byles) who crossed the 4 biggest varieties he knew, and created a variety that produced immense, tasty fruit. He paid off his mortgage by selling seedlings (or fruits, as some sources indicate).
  • A detailed story by Jeff MacCormack can be found here.
  • The parents of Mortgage Lifter are German Johnson, Beefsteak (a.k.a. Red Ponderosa, or Crimson Cushion), and some unknown English and Italian varieties.
