History

Heirloom from 1930s, said to be developed by a gardener Marshall Cletis Byles (simply known as Charlie or Radiator Charlie Byles) who crossed the 4 biggest varieties he knew, and created a variety that produced immense, tasty fruit. He paid off his mortgage by selling seedlings (or fruits, as some sources indicate).

The parents of Mortgage Lifter are German Johnson, Beefsteak (a.k.a. Red Ponderosa, or Crimson Cushion), and some unknown English and Italian varieties.
