History

  • Very old variety that is described in Vilmorin-Andriex (1885).
  • Appeared (introduced?) in Peter Henderson's Vegetable Seed Catalog in 1890.
  • First offered in the Seed Savers 1997 Yearbook by Glenn Drowns of Calamus, Iowa (IA DR G), who got the seed from Norbert Parreira in France. It was incorrectly spelled as Mikado Violetta up until 2006.
  • There was also a variety Mikado Violehrot offered in the Seed Savers 1992 Yearbook by Curtis D. Choplin of Augusta, South Carolina (SC CH C), who described it as potato leaf, small pink, and who said the seed came to him from Prof. Klapprott, Germany. Probably this is the same tomato as Mikado Violettor.
