Tatiana Kouchnareva (B.C KO T). Dwarf Jade Beauty - ripe fruit. 2012-10-02.

Indet., dwarf (tree-type) plants with rugose foliage, potato leaf, small round fruits that ripen to green. Clear skin, bright green juicy flesh. 2-4 oz. Excellent sweet flavor that gets better later in the season. It may be a bit difficult to tell when fruits are ripe, as they do not change color too much, so you will need to test them for ripeness by gently squeezing the fruit. Some cracking observed. (15 seeds / packet)

Seed source:

Craig LeHoullier of Raleigh, North Carolina (NC LE C) 11 / Reinhard Kraft, Neukirchen, Germany 11

Year grown: 2012, 2016

Location: Zone 7b, PNW, Anmore, BC, Canada (760 ft above sea level)

Mid-season. One of the more productive new dwarf varieties, Dwarf Jade Beauty has deep green, rugose potato leaf foliage and a very stout central stem, growing to 4 feet, and perhaps a bit more depending upon conditions. Fruits are smooth and round, ranging from 2-4 ounces, and barely change color upon ripening - though a pale pink blossom end blush develops on many of the fruit. The flesh is bright green, and the flavor is balanced, full and delicious.
2011 growout
I grew out vial 2820, F9 seed which I got from Reinhard Kraft and is the CV seed source. Plant habit and leaf shape as expected - Indeterminate potato leaf dwarf, more "vertical" and rugose than Beryl Beauty, first ripe fruit in 67 days, plant still healthy and producing. Yield moderate (it was not in the best location, partially shaded). Fruit is perfectly round and consistently 3 ounces, smooth, green with a very pale pink blossom end when very ripe. Flavor balanced and very good, consistent 7.5 out of 10. This performed as expected. I am saving F10 seed as vial 11-23.

Wonderful sweet taste on this green-when-ripe from the Dwarf Project. 2-5 oz fruit on a rugose leaf indeterminate plant. Mid-season, 75 days.

  • Developed in the 2006-2011 by the members of the Dwarf Tomato Project from a cross between Golden Dwarf Champion with Green Giant made in 2006 by Patrina Nuske Small in Australia, and named Sneezy.
  • The variety was selected and named by Craig LeHoullier after the gemstone Jade, which exhibits coloring similar to the tomato.
  • Others tomato growers involved in its development are Lisa Moore, Richard Watson (New Zealand), Howard Kushner, and Bill Minkey (Wisconsin).
  • Should be quite stable in its 9th generation.
  • More information about the development of this cultivar can be found on the Dwarf Tomato Project website.
