- Russian origin, possibly from Altai, Siberia, Russia (judging by the name).
- First appears in the Seed Savers 1993 Yearbook, listed by Carolyn Male of Latham, New York (NY MA C) and Thane H. Earle, Whitewater, Wisconsin (WI EA T), both with incorrect spelling of the name (Violaceum Altaistky).
