ID DE M

These were nice little round orange tomatoes (maybe 2.3 inches in diameter; maybe a little smaller than a tennis ball). They weren't super productive, for me, but they weren't seriously unproductive considering the crowded conditions (between two plants, I got maybe 8–20 tomatoes). When cut in half, they looked a lot like pictures of Nebraska Wedding tomatoes I've seen. Sutton's Best of All, which I grew near it, was the same shape and size, and matured at the same time; production also seemed similar. One remarkable thing about these is that the taste actually improved quite a bit after refrigeration. Size and shape was very consistent between fruits. Midseason. I plan to grow it again in 2017 from seeds I saved.

Year grown: 2016

Location: New Plymouth, Idaho

History

  • This variety was described as a Maine heirloom by its introducer, Johnny's Selected Seeds , in the mid 1980s. In conversation with Rob Johnston, he indicated that Valencia is a selection from Sunray, a commercial variety from the 1940s (Sunray itself is a selection from Jubilee, a Burpee variety from 1942, to which additional disease tolerance was added by carrying out crossing and selection).
