History
|
* A family heirloom that originated from F … * A family heirloom that originated from Fred Limbaugh of Robinson, Pennsylvania. Fred's father and grandfather raised it in the 1930s.
* The original name of this tomato was Potato Top, but it was later renamed to Limbaugh’s Legacy Potato Top by Doug Oster to honor Fred Limbaugh after his death (February 2008).
* Doug Oster met Fred Limbaugh in 2000. Fred had been giving away the plants to friends and family for years, as he wanted to share this wonderful big pink meaty tomatoes, and of course he shared some plants with Doug.
* In the mid-2000s, Doug Oster continued Fred's project of spreading this tomato around, and he started giving away the seeds of 'Potato Top' with the condition that gardeners send him some seeds at the end of the season so he would have more the next year to keep the program going. Doug said he "wanted everyone to taste it and hoped that by sharing the seed, we could guarantee the survival of this tomato with potato-like foliage for a long time. Every year the project grew, expanding from Western Pennsylvania to other states and eventually to many other countries. One summer, I got 140,000 seeds back from readers all over the world."
* See detailed story at The Backyard Gardener: Gardener's legacy lives on in plants (March 01, 2008, by Doug Oster, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette).
* First offered in the Seed Savers 1993 Yearbook by John P. Rahart of Saratoga, Wyoming (WY RA J), listed as Pink Potato Top. (WY RA J), listed as Pink Potato Top.
