History
- F1 hybrid, developed at Rutgers NJAES (New Jersey Agricultural Experimental Station) in 1968 by Dr. Bernard Pollack from a cross of KCA x Abbie. KCA was a breeding line that Dr. Pollack got from a plant breeder working for the Campbell Soup Co. in New Jersey. Abbie came from an early maturing breeding line Dr. Pollack got from a plant breeder friend from the University of North Dakota. This line was still segregating when Dr. Pollack received it, and he made selections from it and named it after his daughter, Abbie. Abbie tomato was resistant to verticillium wilt, and KCA was resistant to fusarium wilt, which resulted in Ramapo F1 resistance to both.
- Ramapo F1 seed has not been commercially available for many years, but it came back in 2008 as Rutgers has continued to receive requests for this popular hybrid tomato.
- Ramapo F1 was de-hybridized by Carolyn Male of Latham, New York, and the OP version is available through SSE Yearbook. See Ramapo.
