B.C KO T

Indet. plants with wispy regular leaf foliage. Pepper shaped elongated red fruits with pointed end, 5" long, 3-9 oz. Beautiful meaty dark red flesh, small seed cavities that may be partially hollow. Excellent sweet flavor, great for eating fresh or it makes a great tomato sauce. (15 seeds / packet)

Fruit for me tended to be hollow and dry in all years grown. Generally broader and "fatter" than the "Similar Varieties" listed below. Very nice sweet flavor. Probably has the anr antirrhinum gene: Fruit elongated with hollow tip from which epiglotis extends resembling a snapdragon flower. I thought this fruit had better flavor qualities than Opalka but comparatively lacked in production and moisture. Excellent variety for drying. Low seed set.

History

  • Gallo Plum was sent to Craig LeHoullier in a substantial National Gardening Association-initiated seed swap in 1990 by Charlotte Mullens of West Virginia. Charlotte collected tomatoes from many other gardeners and sent Craig many that he listed in the SSE for the first time, such as Armenian and Giant Syrian (in addition to Gallo Plum).
(Craig's note: I will go through my many letters and try to find any additional info...)
