- Large vines need caging or staking, good productivity of large (usually 12-18 oz) meaty deep red fruit, usually oblate but some with irregular shapes, few seeds in numerous small gel sacks, rich tomato flavor make these a long-time favorite of mine.

- This was my largest tomato of 2016 (along with Chapman and George Detsikas Italian Red, I got a fair amount of 2lb tomatoes). Production was much better than it first looked like it would be, but late. Fruits were of variable sizes (with only a few ~2lb tomatoes; the other 2lb varieties were more consistently huge). The taste was somewhat tangy (but not as tangy as Matina was for me in 2016); it wasn't acidic. It didn't get mealy (many of my large tomatoes did). It tasted great as sauce, but may be too juicy for paste (without removing the juice). The shape varied from beefsteak to rounder.

History
- It is a French family heirloom obtained by Craig LeHoullier and Carolyn Male in an extensive sharing of seeds in 1992 with Norbert Pairerra of Hellimer, France. Mr Pairerra sent Craig and Carolyn letters with a handwritten list of hundreds of varieties of French named OP tomatoes. They selected those that sounded most interesting, and growouts started the season after they were received.
- This is one of the 100 varieties described in Carolyn J. Male's book "100 Heirloom Tomatoes for the American Garden".
- The Garden Seed Inventory 6th edition noted 11 commercial sources in 2004.
- Sometimes the name is misspelled 'Coustralee'.
