* A very old heirloom variety originally f … * A very old heirloom variety originally from France, it was renamed and offered in North America by Peter Henderson & Co. in 1890 as 'Big Boston'.
* Dates back to the 19th century.
* This lettuce was not only popular in North America, but also in Russia in the late 1890s. It was offered in 1898 Seed Catalog of V.E. Grachev of Saint Petersburg, Russia, as one of the largest lettuces known at that time.
* According to [[Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds]] , the original French name was Laitue [[Lorthols]].
