History

  • Seeds of this traditional variety were sent to Simone Lovano by his uncle in 2014 after his trip to Sicily in 2013.
  • In Sicily, the Siccagno di Valledolmo tomato is traditionally grown around the town of Valledolmo in the Palermo province, including in Petralia Soprana where Simone Lovano first saw the tomato being grown.
  • This tomato is one of the primary Siccagno types of tomatoes, meaning that it is grown using dry farming methods with no irrigation and leaving the plants to grow on the ground without staking. The plants are incredibly short, and they likely have a dwarfing gene.
  • Seeds of this type will be planted for the first time by Simone Lovano in 2015 in California.
  • This variety displays very strong drought-tolerance and is included among the best in drought-response in this scientific research article.
