indet. plants with regular foliage that produce ripe fruits relatively early in the season. Fruits are medium sized flattened globes, 5-8 oz. The flavor is very good, with citrusy undertone, the flesh is very juicy, with lots of gel around small seeds. Fruits do not store very well and need to be consumed within 3-5 days after picking.
2009 growout notes

A.k.a. Lemmony. Large vines that need caging or staking. First maturity around 83 days. Moderate to good production (well into the fall) of deep yellow, slightly flattened/oblate fruits, typically about 6-8 oz. They have a delightfully tangy, perhaps citrus-like flavor but are not overpoweringly acidic-tasting; I find the taste to be very crisp and refreshingly different. I don’t grow it every year because I have too many other varieties to maintain and new ones to try, but I keep coming back to Limmony every 2-3 years because I like it so much.

History

  • A Russian heirloom that was brought to SSE by David Cavagnaro with the first venture that SSE made to Russia in the early 1990s.
  • (note by Craig) It is listed in my spreadsheet as "Lemmony", but my now faded memory thinks it may also have been labeled as "Limmony" on the packet. I received the variety from David Cavagnaro in 1994; I will have to look back at the old yearbooks to see if I listed it, or just shared it with other seed savers, who then listed it.
  • The 6th edition of Garden Seed Inventory published by SSE notes seven commercial sources in 2004.

Russian name: Лимонный (a.k.a. "Limonnyi" or "Limonny" - either is a 'correct' Russian spelling)
