Russian name: Исполин
- The name can be translated as "Giant" or "Colossus" from Russian.
- Not the same as Ispolin Malinovyi, a pink beefsteak of larger size, originated in Siberia, Russia.
- Not the same as the pink-fruited Ispolin listed at SSE and available from Tomatofest.
History/Background
- Russian variety vended by a number of seed companies in Moscow, Russia. According to Andrey, this is the 'true' Russian "Ispolin" variety, which is supposed to be red (as known to Russian gardeners), and not pink. Tatiana's growouts in 2005 and 2007 were consistent with Andrey's description, except for the fruit size, which was smaller than advertised. Andrey says that this variety has been known in Russia for the last 10 years, if not longer.
- There is a pink-fruited version of Ispolin available in North America, both offered through SSE Yearbook and sold by seed vendors like Tomatofest and Seeds Trust. It is quite possible that the pink version could be in fact another Siberian variety known in Russia as Ispolin Malinovyi.
