History
- Listed by Buist in 1946, where it was described as following:
- "90 Days from Plants - Vines open and spreading; for best results train a single stem to each stake or trellis. Fruits very large, flat, golden yellow, flesh firm, tender and almost free from seeds. Delicious, mellow with practically no acid. Attractive and tasty when sliced."
- Craig LeHoullier wonders if this is an example of a company making a "selection" of a known variety to create their own exclusive. Note that the best known yellow of the time, Golden Queen - Queen as a synonym of sorts for Monarch, perhaps? Hence, Buist may have made their own selection of Golden Queen showing a particular superior characteristic and released it as Golden Monarch. To his eye, it is similar in color and flavor to Golden Queen, but perhaps showing larger fruit. One caution is in assuming that any old CV taken from the USDA collection exists as it did upon release!
