Impressive producer of extra large tomatoes, often 2+, up to 6 lbs. Update: on September 30, 2017, Steve Marley of Clinton, New York submitted a certified 8.22 pound Domingo specimen at the CNY Pumpkinfest weighoff! See: Bigpumpkins.com 2017 Weighoff Results for documentation. Larger specimens often result from multiple, tightly fused ovaries, so lobing is not as pronounced as in most other giant varieties. Red flesh with relatively few seeds; clear skin of average thickness, so fruits can usually keep for a few days. Flavor is very pleasant, well balanced and delicious - several very positive reviews from gardeners who have grown it. Fruits are somewhat susceptible to splitting if not kept evenly watered. Main picture is of a very tasty specimen which weighed in at 4.670 lb. and was the Utah State record heaviest tomato for a few weeks. Large, healthy, indeterminate vines also produce surprisingly early for such a large-fruited variety - 71 days from transplant documented, 114 days from sowing. A multi-generational family heirloom from Castellammare del Golfo, Sicily, Italy. Vincenzo Domingo, who introduced this variety to North America, has grown 4 tomatoes on a single truss with a total weight of around 20 lbs.! Since 2013, a significant number of the giant tomatoes submitted to the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth have been this variety. Vincenzo passed away in December 2014, but his family's tomato growing legacy continues with this variety. Seeds obtained directly from those produced by Vincenzo and generously shared by his daughter, Maria Cicciarella. Variety named by Dale Thurber of Delectation of Tomatoes by consultation with and consent of Vincenzo and Maria. A grower from the UK apparently renamed this variety, "Alabama Belle" in honor of the Alabama state record 4.55 lb. specimen grown by Hezekiah Wahl in 2012; this renaming likely happened without consulting the Domingo family or recognition of Alabama Belle as an existing varietal name of a very different tomato that dates back to at least 1917.
