History

  • Family heirloom of Djena Lee, recorded history dating back at least to the early 1920s. Djena was the granddaughter of Jim Lee, a 19th century financier in Minnesota. Djena gave the seed to a Reverend Frank Morrow of St. Paul, Minnesota, who has long maintained the variety. According to Amy Goldman, Reverend Frank Morrow introduced this tomato in the SSE 1981 Yearbook. Southern Exposure Seed Exchange offered it commercially in 1981.
  • This variety won first prize at the Chicago Fair for ten consecutive years "back in the day".
  • Djena Lee's Golden Girl is one of the tomato varieties on Slow Food USA's "Ark of Taste".
  • Ten commercial sources were noted for 2004 in the Garden Seed Inventory 6th edition.
