- Large sprawling vines need caging or staking, productive, large 10-16 oz fruit that turn from orange to rich brownish red, good flavor like that of Cherokee Purple. Aside from the interesting difference in color, they are like Cherokee Purple to me – and that’s a good thing!

- Vigorous regular leaf indeterminate vines, high yields of oblate fruit that average 10 ounces but can run as large as 1.5 pounds, meaty deep red interiors with evenly distributed small seed locules, seeds have green gel when ripe, exterior color deep brick orange red at the blossom end shading to quite a dark brownish hue at the shoulder - essentially a yellow skinned variant of Cherokee Purple. I've noted that when compared to Cherokee Purple it appears to be a bit more prone to Fusarium wilt and Bacterial wilt, but this has not been investigated in controlled growouts.

- The indeterminate, regular leaved plants took eighty-one days to give the first ripened fruit. The fruits rarely went over twelve ounces and most were in the eight to ten area. The fruits have rich brown shoulders with stripes that cover the rest of the brick red fruit. I didn't find that it tasted as good as Cherokee Purple, it tasted more acidic and had a thinner skin.
Seed source:
- Reimer Seeds / Local tomato seedling from Bountiful Garden
Year grown: 2010
Location: San Jose, California, Zone 9b
History
- In 1995, one plant of Cherokee Purple (from seed that Craig LeHoullier saved in 1991) gave fruit that had a deep orange red hue, shading to chocolate brown at the shoulders. Subsequent grow out of the saved seed indicated it was likely a skin color mutation (clear in Cherokee Purple to yellow in Cherokee Chocolate), as it has come true from that point onward.
- One commercial source was noted for 2004 in the Garden Seed Inventory 6th edition: Sand Hill Preservation Center .
