History

• The original variety, Rostova, is a heirloom red beefsteak from Southern Russia that was introduced to the west by Nik Peplenov who immigrated to the US in 1999 and brought with him his favorite heirloom seeds from the Rostov, Don region of Russia.
• First offered commercially by SeedFest in 2001. In 2003 Gary Ibsen, the owner of TomatoFest , renamed Rostova variety to "Sunset's Red Horizon", and TomatoFest has been offering Sunset's Red Horizon tomato since then.
• Unfortunately sometime later after Rostova was first reoffered by TomatoFest under the new name, something happened with the seed stock, and the seeds offered by TomatoFest nowadays are described as heart-shaped. The heart-shaped variant found its way to the hands of many gardeners, and into other commercial seed catalogs as Rostova (i.e., 2007 Tomato Growers Supply seed catalog).
• The true Rostova is a red beefsteak. Today’s Sunset’s Red Horizon sold by TomatoFest is a red heart. It is clear that today's Sunset’s Red Horizon and the original Rostova are two different tomatoes, and should not be confused.
