- Named for a jailer from Winchester, Kentucky who always grew a plant in front of a city jail and would give away plants when he ran for office.
- First introduced in Seed Savers 2009 Yearbook by Neil Lockhart of Oblong, Illinois (IL LO N), who obtained the seed from Julie Maruskin, Winchester, Kentucky in 2008.
