History

  • Prior to the black tomato mania that is currently in full swing, a tomato named "Black" was available from the Alfrey company (originator of Peter pepper!). Craig LeHoullier grew it out in 1991 and found it to be very similar to Cherokee Purple in color, size and flavor. What this makes clear is that there are several tomatoes now known with the name "black" - a red/black (brown) and the pink/black (purple) . The source of "Black" to Alfrey is not yet known.
