History

  • Offered commercially by Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds in 2008.
  • Jere Gettle, the owner of Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds , received the seed from William Woys Weaver of Pennsylvania (PA WE W), who claimed that his grandfather obtained seed from breeder Dr. Harold E. Martin in the late 1920s.
  • According to Southern Exposure Seed Exchange , this is a cross between Brandywine and Fejee Improved, bred by Dr. Harold E. Martin. If this is true, I would question why this tomato was named 'True Black Brandywine'.
  • A few tomato folks at Tomatoville questioned the authenticity of the 'true' strain, specifically around its recent introduction (2007-2008).
  • First introduced to SSE by Jere Gettle of Missouri (MO GE J) in 2008.
  • Southern Exposure Seed Exchange offered it in their 2010 Catalog as Black Brandywine.
