History

  • Not a Russian variety, despite the name.
  • Bred at the Levin Ag. Res. Center (New Zealand) in 1943, released in 1949. Not commercially popular at the time because of the small fruit, but it became the most popular New Zealand home garden variety.
  • Not to be confused with Red Russian, which is a different variety.
