I have mistakenly been calling this variety by the name “Favorite” but the more correct name is Livingston’s Favorite. Large vines need caging or staking, good production of mostly 6-8 oz smooth round red fruits with very good flavor. Fruit generally do not crack even in wet weather. Originally bred for canning, the fruit endure handling and shipping well.

History

  • Introduced in 1883 by Livingston Seed Company.
  • The description from the 1900 Livingston's Seed Catalog says:
"The canners favorite and one of the best and largest perfect shaped Red Tomatoes in cultivation. Ripens evenly and early, holding its size to the end of the season; free from cracks, very prolific, good flavor, few seeds, flesh solid, bears shipping long distances. It is used extensively in the canning sections of Maryland, and has been generally grown for ears for canners' trade throughout the United States."
  • PI 636262. Donated to the USDA in 1963.
  • USDA narrative:
"F.W. Bolgiano & Co., Inc. 1942 catalog"
