My hopes for the cross are to find plants that set fruits into the worst heat, looking for those that surpass both parents in drought hardiness. Because Kamatis Tagalog is a pink tomato, 1/4 of this generation of PB x KT will be pink as well. There should also be variation in fruit size and shape, as well as flavor. In addition to the hardiness they are very early, and the fruits seldom crack. The semi-determinate plants never get terribly large, about 3 feet at most, and should not be pruned as that would severely decrease production.

intentional cross

History

  • An intentional hybrid between two historic cultivars, Punta Banda which is native to Mexico, and Kamatis Tagalog which is native to the Philippines. The parents were chosen for their heat and drought tolerance with hopes of increasing those qualities.
  • "Salubong" is Tagalog for a sacred encounter with birds, namely their messengers to creation, the Tigmamanukan. "Cuautli" is Nahuatl for eagle.
  • F2 seed first offered by Good Mind Seeds in 2013.
