Seed source:

Ismail Cetintas of MeyveliTepe, 2013

Year grown: 2014

Location: Tampa, Florida

History

  • Selected and stabilized from a hybrid cherry tomato purchased in a grocery store in Britain in 2007 by Ismail Cetintas of MeyveliTepe. Cetintas released the seeds of the stabilized version as Alis' Pembe Kiraz ("pembe" means pink, "kiraz" means cherry), Alis being the nickname of his daughter (Alize) who favor the tomato, in 2013. Alis' Pembe Kiraz is very rare as not many Turkish varieties exist as part of amateur breeding and/or de-hybridization efforts. Cetintas has been one of the distinguished pioneers for organic gardening in Turkey. He has made a lot of foreign resources and his experiences/knowledge in organic gardening available to many Turkish farmers and home gardeners through his blog, MeyveliTepe (literally means FruityHill) where he also lives with this family, for many years now.
  • Seeds were obtained from Ismail Cetintas through agaclar.net's 2013 online seed trade event. agaclar.net had around 150,000 members by the end of July, 2014, and is the most comprehensive source in Turkish for threads about nature (e.g. farming, organic growing methods, environmental policy discussions etc.).
  • Variety was grown as part of Anatolian Heirloom Seeds Recovery Project (ANATOHUM) which also includes Turkish varieties bred by amateur growers.
  • From Turkey.
