History * Russian origin, from Institute of Hortic * Russian origin, from Institute of Horticulture in Barnaul, Altai, Siberia. The original Russian name is unknown/lost; it was probably named by Bill McDorman of Hailey, Idaho who collected the seeds in Russia. * Introduced commercially [[Seeds Trust/High Altitude Gardens]] in the early 90s. * First offered in the Seed Savers 1994 Yearbook by Donald C. Kellums of Port Byron, Illinois (IL KE D). * Some SSE members described it as a beefsteak, but others described it as a heart.
