Very vigorous pole bean. Romano type. Pods will get red speckling when mature beyond young green beans stage. 6" long pods. Freshly collected seeds are beige seeds with burgundy streaks, they will acquire light brownish shade when fully dried. Very beautiful and delicious. Very productive. Late maturing.

History

  • According to the Seed Savers Exchange seed catalog, this bean have been brought to North America on the Mayflower by Ann Hutchinson in 1620, followed by a long history of being circulated in the Carolinas.
  • The original native Seneca name is Ohsahe'da Deyehagwayesdahgwa. The name means something like 'a beans that grow up the cornstalk'. This bean have been grown by Seneca Indians for a very long time. The Mayflower bean is believed to be a selection from the native bean.
