Green crisphead lettuce that is slow bolting. Very nice taste, sweet with a very slight touch of bitterness that makes it more flavorful. Cold hardy. White/gray seed.

Nice large crisphead (Batavia) type, light to medium green outer leaves with pale green interior, excellent variety that thrives in cooler weather but also holds well in moderate heat. Light gray seeds.

History

  • Very old variety, introduced by Henry A. Dreer Company in 1871, offered by Burpee and others in the 1890s.
  • Hanson dates back at least to 1855. Very popular variety a hundred years ago, rivaled only by the variety ‘Prizehead’.
  • PI 536738. Donated to the USDA in 1959 by Pieter-Wheeler Seed Company.
  • A.k.a. Hanson Improved. May be the same as varieties named Ewing’s Excelsior, Gardener’s Favorite and/or King of the Market
  • USDA description:
Maturity 80 days. Seeds white. Heart large round, light green, white crisp, sweet. Very hardy.
